Welcome message from the Chairman
15 October de 2025
Welcome to the 10th ICFFR & 19th IWFSS
We welcome you to the 10th Edition of the International Conference on Forest Fire Research, which has been held, since 1990, every four years in Coimbra, to bring together scientists, decision makers, practitioners and other stakeholders, dealing with the complex task of managing wildfire risk, interested in supporting their work on sound and updated knowledge derived from science and practice.
The four years since 2022 have not witnessed a reduction in the wildfire problem worldwide. On the contrary, there is an increased perception that wildfires are becoming more widespread, now even in regions where their incidence was previously minor, and that we are experiencing more frequent periods of favourable conditions for the development of extreme wildfire events. This effect is compounded by climate change, which, in many regions, is producing higher air temperatures, longer and more frequent heat waves, and less precipitation, consequently leading to more intense and destructive fires.
During this period, scientific research continued to make efforts to better understand the processes and provide guidance to managers and citizens on how to assess, mitigate, and adapt to minimise wildfire risk. In Europe, for example, several large research projects have mobilised hundreds of scientists and other stakeholders to develop a common roadmap for addressing wildfires, leveraging scientific and technical advances.
The 10th International Conference on Forest Fire Research, scheduled to take place in Coimbra in November 2026, will provide an opportunity for this wide community to meet, exchange the latest scientific results and technical innovations, and share experiences and good practices.
For the third time in its history – and the second consecutive – the conference will be held jointly with the International Wildland Fire Safety Summit (IWFSS), an initiative of the International Association of Wildland Fire.
The Conference will follow its usual format, consisting of plenary and parallel sessions, with both oral and poster presentations. We will also have the short courses on fire behaviour and fire safety on the indicated dates.
Works with a scientific background on all topics related to wildfires are welcome to be submitted for presentation at the Conference, either in oral or poster format. We also welcome submissions with a more operational focus for inclusion in the Safety Summit. All submissions will be reviewed by our esteemed Scientific Committee.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Coimbra in November 2026!
