Study Tour, on 6 November, 2026

A one-day technical study tour will take us to the area affected by the August 2025 Piódão wildfire, the largest recorded wildfire in Portugal, which burned nearly 65,000 hectares and lasted 11 days before being brought under control. The visit will provide participants with the opportunity to observe and discuss wildfire behaviour, fire impacts on the landscape and on the communities, and post-fire recovery in the field. The programme includes several technical stops within the burned area, where the main characteristics of the fire and the factors influencing its development will be presented and discussed. The tour will also include a guided visit to the historic village of Piódão, a regional lunch, and an interpretative walk through the Mata da Margaraça, one of the best-preserved native forests in Portugal. During this visit, participants will be introduced to a new CEIF/ADAI project focusing on best practices for wildfire risk management in protected forested areas. A stop will also be made at Fraga da Pena, a site of recognised natural, cultural and historical interest within the Serra do Açor landscape. ICFFR Photo contest: Visualizing Fire Science

The 10th ICFFR Photo Contest is now open for submissions. We invite researchers, students, and practitioners worldwide to contribute compelling, high-resolution photographs that advance the visual communication of wildland fire science and management across all relevant disciplines. Submissions will be evaluated based on their technical merit, visual insight, and alignment with current research priorities.
